Most problems that orthodontic patients encounter are simple irritation from the brackets (braces) or sore teeth . Applying a small piece of wax over the bracket that is causing the irritation typically solves this problem until you can call our office and schedule an appointment to clip the protruding wire.
Types of ORthodontic Emergencies
Loose Brackets
If you break a bracket or have any loose appliances please call your orthodontist as soon as possible so we can schedule an appointment to refit the brackets or repair the appliance. Place a small piece of wax over the broken bracket until you can be seen.
Wire Irritation
Sometimes as your teeth move the wire may become exposed causing irritation. If this happens try gently pushing the wire back into the bracket and place a piece of wax over the exposed end.
Discomfort
Some patients feel discomfort during the first week of orthodontic treatment and with subsequent adjustments. You may take a non-aspirin pain reliever to help relieve this temporary soreness.
Most Orthodontic “emergencies” can be temporarily solved by placing a small piece of wax or Gishy Goo over the irritated area. Gishy Goo is a soft, squishy material you can put on your braces to keep them from poking the insides of your mouth… Kind of like wax, but with better adhesion.
